Our
timeless atta grass purses & handbags are
woven from a vine indigenous to the foothills of Bali's valcanoes.
It is split and woven into purses, baskets,
boxes, coster, etc. by master
weavers from one area of Bali. The rich brown color is created
by smoking the artifacts in a smoke house using a fire of coconut
hesks that are soaked in honey. The color will not wear off nor
will the slight smoky scent. Some purses have black designs which
are woven with the root of the vine.
Bali Painter Ida Bagus Made Poleng (1915...., Tebesaya, Gianyar, Bali), better
known as Ida Bagus Made, first learned painting from his father,
Ida Bagus Made Kembeng (1897-1952), a Pitamaha artist's association member who
won the Argent Certificate of Merit and a Silver Medal at the 1937 International
Exposition in Paris, France. Poleng also was a member of Pitamaha.
Some of his works featured figures based on diagrams of Balinese magic. Under
the influence of Rudolf Bonnet (Dutch, 1895-1978), he focused instead on scenes
of daily life with more naturalistic looking figures and foliage in softer colors.
