Traditional Balinese Painting Artist I Gusti Ngurah Putu Wedagama

Gusti Ngurah Wedagama is member of Ubud Artist Community. Gusti Wedagama was born around 1955 in the family household where he now live with his family and shows his painting at Banjar Tebesaya, Peliatan, Ubud, Gainyar, Bali, Indonesia.

His mother said that after living only 42 days Gusti Wedagama died. A Brahman priest heard that tragedy and came to the house and prayed. After many hours of praying he sprinkled holy water on the baby and Gusti Wedagama came back to life. The priest than changed Gusti's last name from Mantra to Wedagama with means flower of the holy book.

Even in village of superb painters Gusti Wedagama's talent stands out. He won 1st prize at the prestigious Festival of Traditional Balinese Painting in 1982. In 1985 he took third prize at the Indonesian-wide compotition in Jakarta.

Gusti Wedagama is a devoulty religious man and a student of the meditation teacher Sri Chimnoy. In 1980, during a meditation, he envisioned a new stylized form of Balinese painting and went on to create the Kenceng (streched) style that is now widely imitated. Kenceng was early, successful attempt to break out of traditional Balinese forms while maintaining a strong connection with Hindu religious motifs.

The artistry of Gusti Wedagama's Kenceng paintings stand out from his imitators in the originality of the compositions and subtle shadings and blending of colors. What appear to be solid browns and greens reveal themselves, on closer inspection, to be blends of ochre, limes, pinks, lavenders, and yellows.

Gusti Wedagama's talent and mastery of various painting and carving techniques have earned him the position of art teacher at the senior high school in Ubud the capital of painting in Indonesia. He continues to explore new methods and styles while staying connected to classical Balinese images. His work has sold to collectors in North America, Europe and Japan, yet he keeps his prices modest by selling only through his small private painting gallery on Tebesaya road where he also display paintings by his talented brother, I Gusti Putu Mantra and his students.
